Pulse3 – Managing your profiles

As mentioned in my previous post, the new release of Pulse brings a lot of changes – not just UI but also in the way you manage your profiles. Unlike earlier, now you can manage your profiles/software stacks more efficiently and with very less efforts. Here’s a short description about managing profiles in Pulse3.

Managing profiles:

Managing profiles

To get started all you need to have is a profile (you can create one or you may already have it under – MyProfiles). Selecting the profile opens up the page with – Overview, Software and Collaboration tabs. Here you can maintain profiles and share/collaborate with your team. I’ll save the details about the Collaboration tab for the next tutorial.
Switch to the software tab and you will be presented with a set of sections – Browse Software, My Software, Getting started.., Software updates available. All these sections enable you to smartly manage your software stack. Lets dive a bit deeper into each of these sections.

Browse software:

Broser Software

Here you can browse through the huge list of softwares that are provided. Selecting a software and double clicking it would immediately add the same into the recent software list – this happens in a flip of a second. Just a double click and there you go. Pulse3 is smart enough in finding the dependencies and asking the user to add them(that’s smart!). You can also browse through the update site(s), add update sites and add software from there. With the “Recent list” – you can keep track of whats been recently added. If you are a bit lazy like me, you can take advantage of the search facility. Just type in the software you want and you have it – try typing “Classpath Checker” and you have it focused in the tree. Once again, hovering over the “i” icon would provide you all the details that you need.

My Software:

My Software

This section presents you with – Base software stack, shared software and the Personal software list. Software under “personal software” are personal to you and is not shared. You can share your personal software(s) by selecting it and right click->Share. This adds the personal software to the shared software list, enabling it to be shared across teams. You can unshare the shared software. You can also learn more about the selected software using – “view details” and also remove the software if you no more need it.

The other two sections – details and Software updates are quiet easy to understand and requires no detail explanation. I hope this post helps you in understanding the new way of managing profiles in Pulse3.
That’s it for now. Have fun!

Pulse3

Once again Genuitec is out with another mind-boggling release of Pulse, making it much easier for the teams to collaborate and share software.  Pulse3 brings – significant enhancements to the UI making it more intuitive, improved dashboard, enhanced ability to manage your software and more control, improved security, plenty of goodies for both – free and private label editions. Some of the highlights are  -

Significant UI enhancements:

Pulse3 Explorer

Pulse3 UI

The UI has been completely re-tailored and looks more intuitive. It includes the highly interactive dashboard that allow the teams to easily synchronize the entire process of software creation, management and delivery to the end user. It also provides a separate view for profiles – “MyProfiles” that shows all the shared and unshared profiles.  The toolbar makes it more simple to work with profiles. Selecting a profile opens up a view with – Overview, Software and Collaborate tabs, for managing the profiles and collaborating with your pals. Hovering over Pulse Help icon shows up all the details about a particular section – no more googling for help, its right there in Pulse3. In addition, you can categorize the profiles – something that was not part of Pulse2. With each section providing sufficient information and with simple and clean UI, I believe the user can get started with no time and effort. All the changes in the UI has drastically simplified the user interaction.

Improved sharing:

Collaboration

Collaboration tab

Pulse3 provides a new Collaboration page that enables smarter way of sharing profiles with your pals. The wizard for sharing profiles has also been improved. You can also preconfigure a setup before making it available to others or set up a configuration for yourself, using “A Team of One” section. You can start collaborating just by pasting the invitation ID under “Accept an invitation” section. This can be considered as an alternative to accepting notifications from Notification section. You get all this power with just one click.

Software configuration control:

Software

Software Tab

The “Software” page enables you – add software to your profile, keep track of the added software(s), sharing and unsharing software with your team, get information about the software updates, and provides more details about the software – EPIC votes and other details. You can add software by browsing through the categories and also from any public update sites(even you can add update sites very easily). For adding a software all you need to do is – select the software and just double click it and you get it. This reminds me of how difficult it is to add software in Eclipse, with Pulse3 it has been narrowed down to a double click :) .

Managing Groups:

Groups page

Groups page

The updated Groups page, gives you all the power to control the groups and the members – Enabling you to create and delete Groups, add and delete members, control permissions of the members and profiles and keep track of the shared profiles. Once again, all the details you need can be obtained by just hovering over – (i) icon – no need to run for the help pages.

Oh Yes, there is more to it.

Thanks to the Pulse team for such a wonderful release.
